Position Summary
The Commercial Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) is responsible for ensuring welding operations and completed work meet applicable codes, standards, and project specifications. This role conducts inspections, verifies compliance with AWS and industry standards, documents findings, and works closely with project managers, contractors, and field teams to maintain quality and safety throughout commercial construction and fabrication projects.
Key Responsibilities
Perform visual and non-destructive inspections of welds in accordance with project specifications
Ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards (AWS, ASME, API, etc.)
Review and interpret blueprints, welding procedure specifications (WPS), and construction documents
Verify welder qualifications and certifications
Monitor welding activities to ensure adherence to approved procedures
Document inspection results and maintain detailed inspection reports
Identify defects, non-conformances, and recommend corrective actions
Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and field supervisors regarding quality concerns
Ensure compliance with company safety standards and OSHA regulations
Maintain inspection equipment and calibration records
Participate in project meetings as needed
Qualifications
Current AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification issued by American Welding Society
3+ years of welding inspection experience in commercial or industrial environments
Strong knowledge of welding processes (SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, FCAW, etc.)
Thorough understanding of applicable codes (AWS D1.1, ASME Section IX, etc.)
Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and technical specifications
Experience with non-destructive testing (NDT) methods preferred
Strong documentation and reporting skills
Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving ability
OSHA certification preferred
Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to job sites as required
