We are hiring a Utility Locator/Field Technician

The Utility Locator / Field Technician is responsible for accurately locating and marking underground gas utilities, mapping findings in the company's digital system, and supporting field crews with labor and operations. This position plays a critical role in safety, damage prevention, and project execution.

Starting Pay: $20+/hr (Pay is commensurate with experience)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Typical duties include, but are not limited to:

Utility Locating Responsibilities:

  • Locate underground gas lines using industry-standard locating equipment.
  • Interpret utility maps, prints, and system data to verify underground utility paths.
  • Mark utilities with paint and/or flags in accordance with company and regulatory standards.
  • Accurately document and map located utilities within company software systems.
  • Communicate clearly with project managers, field supervisors, and customers regarding findings.
  • Maintain and care for locating equipment and ensure proper calibration.
  • Follow all 811 and damage prevention regulations and procedures.

Field Technician / Laborer Responsibilities:

  • Support hydrovac and excavation crews as part of a 2-person (or larger) crew.
  • Move debris with shovels.
  • Crawl and kneel in confined spaces and access areas.
  • Lift and remove manhole covers.
  • Pick up, sort, and deliver inventory.
  • Work around equipment and machinery.
  • Work around biohazards such as blood-borne pathogens and sewage.
  • Assist in operating hydrovac equipment in a variety of working environments, including confined spaces.
  • Perform routine inspections and minor repairs of equipment.
  • Prepare work areas by setting up safety measures and addressing potential hazards.
  • Keep equipment clean inside and out.
  • Complete paperwork, forms, service tickets, and daily records as needed.
  • Attend safety meetings.
  • Follow all company, OSHA, and DOT safety policies and procedures.
  • Maintain good communication with employees and customers.
  • Maintain regular attendance and reliability.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum 18 years of age.
  • Ability to communicate in English verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift 50+ pounds repeatedly.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and climb for extended periods.
  • Basic technical skills (tablet, mapping software, mobile applications).
  • Valid driver's license with clean driving record.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screen and background check.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Previous utility locating experience (specifically gas).
  • Knowledge of underground gas distribution systems.
  • Experience with electromagnetic locating equipment.
  • Knowledge of confined space entry and construction safety.
  • Experience reading utility maps and as-built drawings.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in documentation.
  • Customer service and communication skills.
  • Problem-solving and independent decision-making ability.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed primarily outdoors in all types of weather conditions including heat, rain, and cold. Exposure to construction environments, traffic, chemicals, and other hazards. Must be able to wear required PPE including hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, high-visibility clothing, and steel-toe boots.

Travel to job sites during the workweek and occasional overnight stays may be required depending on project needs.
