What You Will Do

Johnson Controls is seeking a Controls Engineer I to support the development, testing, and maintenance of control system software for industrial refrigeration and HVAC equipment. In this role, you will be part of a collaborative engineering team delivering control solutions for chillers, air handling units, and smart building products that improve performance, reliability, and energy efficiency. This is an excellent opportunity for an early‑career engineer to gain hands-on experience with real-world HVAC and industrial systems while working alongside experienced engineers in a supportive, learning-focused environment. You will contribute to solutions that support sustainability, decarbonization, and data center efficiency.

How You Will Do It

  • Support the design and implementation of control software for chillers and air handling equipment

  • Assist with testing, debugging, and validation of control algorithms under guidance from senior engineers

  • Develop and maintain models and logic using MATLAB/Simulink

  • Apply foundational control engineering concepts including modeling, simulation, and data analysis

  • Participate in lab testing, data collection, and performance evaluations

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams such as engineering, testing, and manufacturing

  • Document control functionality, test results, and engineering changes

  • Learn and apply model-based design and embedded systems development best practices

What We Look For

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Software, Systems Engineering, or a related engineering discipline

  • 2+ years of experience in controls engineering, automation, or a related technical role (including internships or co-ops)

  • Exposure to MATLAB/Simulink through academic or professional experience

  • Basic understanding of control systems and embedded software concepts

  • Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to learn in a team environment

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to travel up to 5%, as needed, to support projects and testing activities

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience or coursework related to HVAC, refrigeration, or industrial systems

  • Familiarity with model-based design concepts

  • Exposure to embedded C/C++ or scripting with Python or MATLAB

  • Experience working in a laboratory or test environment

SALARY RANGE: $75,000 - $115,000 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.) This position includes a competitive benefits package. The posted salary range reflects the target compensation for this role.
