This attorney oversees professional liability litigation across all Prime-insured hospitals and affiliated physicians, providing legal counsel on clinical risk issues, regulatory inquiries, and risk mitigation strategies.
The ideal candidate is an attorney with a clinical background, such as a former Registered Nurse or healthcare professional who has obtained a J.D., or an experienced healthcare attorney with deep in-house or private practice experience supporting hospital systems in clinical operations, professional liability, and risk management.

This attorney oversees professional liability litigation across all Prime-insured hospitals and affiliated physicians, providing legal counsel on clinical risk issues, regulatory inquiries, and risk mitigation strategies.

Professional Liability Litigation & Claims Management
- Oversee and manage professional liability litigation for all Prime-insured hospitals, physicians, and affiliated healthcare providers.
- Serve as the primary legal contact for hospital operators on daily patient care risk issues, including incident reporting, regulatory citations, corrective action plans, and subpoena responses.
- Partner with the Legal Department’s professional liability and general liability litigation teams to manage claims from pre-litigation through resolution, ensuring seamless transitions and strategic alignment.
- Actively manage, supervise, and direct outside counsel on assigned matters, setting litigation strategy and controlling costs.
Risk Management & Clinical Operations
- Maintain and enhance an enterprise-wide risk management program designed to reduce claims exposure across Prime’s hospital network.
- Develop and deliver educational materials and training presentations to clinical operations teams aimed at improving patient safety and preventing future claims.
- Drive process improvement initiatives informed by litigation outcomes, claims trends, and risk data.
- Provide legal advice and counsel on clinical issues to hospital leadership, medical staff, and risk management personnel.
Regulatory & Medical Staff Matters
- Advise on interactions with regulatory bodies, including responding to citations, investigations, and requests for corrective action.
- Provide legal guidance on organized medical staff matters, credentialing issues, and peer review proceedings.
- Monitor healthcare regulatory developments and communicate implications to stakeholders.
Qualifications
Required
- J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Active member in good standing of the California State Bar (or eligible for California Registered In-House Counsel status).
- Minimum of ten (10) years of legal experience in a law firm, public sector, or in-house legal department.
- At least five (5) years of experience specifically advising healthcare providers on patient care risk issues, professional liability, or clinical operations.
- Demonstrated experience in the healthcare industry, with hospital system experience strongly preferred.
- Experience managing or directing outside counsel in litigation matters.
Strongly Preferred
- Prior experience as a Registered Nurse (RN) or other licensed healthcare professional is highly preferred.
- In-house legal experience within a hospital system or health system, particularly in professional liability litigation and clinical risk management.
- Significant experience with hospital or healthcare risk management, exposure control, and claims reduction programs.
- Experience handling organized medical staff matters, credentialing, and peer review.
- Prior litigation experience in professional liability or medical malpractice defense (in-house or private practice).
- Private practice experience representing hospitals or healthcare organizations in liability litigation.
- ASHRM (American Society for Health Care Risk Management) certification or equivalent risk management credential.
- Experience interacting with state and federal healthcare regulatory bodies.
